Prep football: Week 6 picks

Bom-bom-bom, another one bites the dust.

Yes, all it took was six seconds and I bested my coworker Michael Black by one game. It’s hard when out of the eight games we only disagreed one contest. However, since I went 7-1 and he went 6-2, it’s clear that those were obviously the correct games to pick for the majority.

Here’s how things are shaking down thus far:
Trevor Phibbs: 31-8-1
James Edward: 29-10-1
Parry’s Power Guide: 27-12-1

Graveyard:
Andrew Aragon: 11-5
Michael Black: 6-2
Matt Valenzuela: 4-4

I’ll be looking to better my two game flying solo this week. It was an extremely hectic week (I’m a student at the University of Utah/test week) and I wasn’t able to put together a competitor. I’m sure everyone is sick of me winning every week anyway.

Davis at Fremont
Are the ‘Wolves ever going to win a big game? The two games circled on the calendar this season they’ve let slip through their hands. It’s duly noted that they lost on the final play to Jordan and in overtime to East – two teams that have a combined record of 9-1. Davis has been impressively mediocre. What a classic double entendre that statement is. Yes, the Darts are currently 3-1 with the big win on the road last week against Syracuse. However, I was never on the Titans bandwagon to begin with — and Davis needed every minute they were given to pull off the “upset” win. I think Fremont handles business at home tonight. Fremont 21, Davis 14.

Dixie at Desert Hills
It seems like I haven’t been able to predict one single southern game correct this season. I’ve lost two Pine View games (one to Desert Hills, one to Dixie) and also the Hurricane game against Skyline to start the season. Hopefully that trend of horrible prognosticating ends tonight. It doesn’t get any harder to pick than this game though. The third and fifth ranked teams in 3A squaring off. Barney has done a terrific job guiding the Flyers offense under center this season. He’s already thrown for over 1,300 yards and 15 scores. Yet, he’s spreading the ball out — connecting with seven different receivers for touchdowns. If anyone has someone to say bring it on, it’s Desert Hills’ Peter Brown. Right now he’s fourth in 3A with 50 tackles, not to mention the Thunder have the No. 1 scoring defense in 3A, giving up slightly more than eight points per game. Unreal defense and at home? Due to increment rain clouds all flights will be postponed tonight. Desert Hills 24, Dixie 21.

Morgan at Stansbury
How ’bout Stansbury? Each and every year the Stallions have improved and now they find themselves 4-1 to start the season. Morgan, however, is trotting into town with an identical record. That’s why this game has been named the Deseret News Game of the Week. Is Stansbury for real though? They’ve beaten Uintah, Park City, Bear River and Tooele. Yikes! Those four teams have combined for an overall 1-18 record. With the lone win coming from Bear River who beat an unknown team from Idaho. In the one game they’ve played against a good opponent, the Stallions were exposed 21-6 against Delta. Meanwhile, Morgan has quality wins against Maple Mountain and South Summit. I’m not a believer in a team that can beat up on cupcakes and then get baked against better teams. Suit up boys; it’s the night of the Trojan. Morgan 28, Stansbury 14.

Juab at Spanish Fork
The first 3A Region game for the Dons is finally upon us. This is where everyone expects Spanish Fork to start to lay down the law. Currently, the Dons are 3-2 with losses against 5A American Fork and probably the best 4A team in the state Logan. Just because a record doesn’t particularly shine greatness, doesn’t mean that team isn’t very talented. For instance, when I was a senior at Alta in 2007, we played a quarterfinal game against Timpanogos — which had to “upset” Northridge to even get an opportunity to play us. We nearly lost that game and I still say, other than Bingham; that was the most talented team we played all season. Juab has started off the season 4-1, but I just can’t get over the one loss to Canyon View. If you’re going to be an elite team, you have to beat the teams you’re supposed to. Spanish Fork will establish the new reign at home tonight. Spanish Fork 42, Juab 24.

Skyline at Herriman
This quite possibly could be the biggest game in the small history of the Herriman football program. The Mustangs have started 5-0 and are hosting arguably the most successful program in the history of Utah high school football. Not to mention the intriguing underline story of Roger Dupaix coaching against his son — whom is the runningbacks and special teams coach for Herriman. I was quick to count the Eagles out at the beginning of the season after losing to Hurricane and Syracuse. But after that win against Juan Diego, I think something changed in the mentality of that program. I’m scared to pick Skyline in this game, it seems like every time I do, I end up getting a loss that week. I’m just curious to see how Herriman plays tonight, I truly don’t believe the Mustangs have had a quality win this far. That’s not a detriment to them either, I think this is a program well on the rise and could be something special. If they win this game, I’m officially a believer. But that’s a big “if.” Skyline 28, Herriman 21.

American Fork at Lone Peak
Anyone think there will be some animosity at this game? Not only are these two teams’ bitter rivals. Two huge contributing factors are swimming beneath the game-line. First off, Chase Hansen, the do-it-all quarterback for the Knights originally played for American Fork before transferring to Lone Peak. Secondly, Lone Peak beat the Cavemen three times in basketball last season, including in the state championship game. The Cavemen have to be tired of being second fiddle to LP. However, that’s not going to change tonight. The Knight’s offense is just too explosive to be contained. I have some serious questions about how talented the Lone Peak defense is after watching them get torched by Highland. That has to change if the Knights expect to beat Jordan, Alta or Bingham. Lone Peak 35, American Fork 17.

South Summit at Manti
For years the Wildcats have dominated everyone other than San Juan. But this isn’t the same South Summit team from years past. This season, it has won the games it was supposed to, and lost the ones it was expected to. As for the Templars, they’re the real deal. I’m very impressed with the opening week win against Delta. Manti has four different players that have scored at least two touchdowns on the ground this season, and I think they’ll use that physicality to pick up an impressive win at home tonight. Manti 24, South Summit 17.

Wasatch at Judge
The wheels are starting to become unhinged at Judge. After starting the season 3-0; the Bulldogs have dropped two straight to Granger and Spanish Fork. Wasatch, on the other hand, has been relatively quite en route to a 3-2 record. When glancing over the Wasps’ schedule, it pops out once again the quality of wins thus far. Grantsville, Ben Lomond and North Sanpete — without quarterback Rhett Bird — are simply lackluster wins. Then, the two programs that actually can compete that they played, Morgan and Juab, outscored the Wasps 69-24. I like the Bulldogs to bounce back and stop the bleeding. Judge 31, Wasatch 20.
