Girls soccer: week one highlights

It’s hard to believe another season of high school sports is already in full swing. Prep football season officially opens this Friday and other sports, such as 1A baseball and girls soccer, started up again last week.

There were some surprising results and notable performances from week one in girls soccer. Here are some highlights you might have missed:

- How about Jordan senior Jade Tarver’s scoring explosion against Logan? It is always impressive when a player can net a hat trick in a game. Tarver did one better. She notched four goals in a 9-2 rout for the Beetdiggers over the Grizzlies. If Tarver can show similar offensive form in Region 4, Jordan could become a thorn in the side of region favorites Alta and Brighton.

- Most surprising result goes to Timpview. The T-birds scored a huge victory by knocking off Lone Peak 3-2 in overtime. Timpview had a 1-0 lead before the Knights rallied in the second half. Emily Curtis was the hero for the T-Birds, scoring the golden goal in the extra period.

- Another thrilling finish came in the match between Desert Hills and Wasatch. The Thunder claimed a 1-0 victory when Berkley Bundy put the game winner in the back of the net in the 79th minute. Bundy has made a habit of scoring clutch goals after being the co-leading scorer for Desert Hills last season.

- Lehi’s tradition of strong goalkeepers looks like it will keep going this season. Ali Houghton earned two shutouts for the Pioneers last week. While other teams and keepers matched that feat, most of them were not going against playoff teams from last fall. Houghton, on the other hand, faced Woods Cross and Snow Canyon – both of whom reached the 4A quarterfinals last fall.

- Kudos to Skyline and Bountiful for playing perhaps the toughest schedules of any team in week one. The Eagles opened with close losses to defending 4A champ Timpanogos and 4A power East and finally broke through with a win over Jordan yesterday. All three games were decided by a 2-1 margin. The Braves opened with three tough games in three days. They started out losing 3-1 to Timpanogos, tied Brighton 1-1 the next afternoon and capped things off the following day with a 4-1 victory over Park City.

It should be fun to see what unfolds this week.
