Football notes from Juab, Delta, Parowan, Maple Mtn.
The 2010 high school football season is a little over a month away, and the Deseret News is already hitting the ground running gearing up for our expansive previews on every team in the state.
Earlier this week I dropped in on Juab’s camp and spoke with coaches from Juab, Delta, Parowan and Maple Mountain about the upcoming season. Each schools individual team preview will be published on our website next month, but here’s a few tidbits from each team.
JUAB Juab is anxious to get the season going after a bizarre season last year. Coach Mike Bowring said he’s happy to report that all the kids have recovered from last year’s injuries, including burn victims Hayden Coombs and J.B. Ellison. Bowring admitted that the first year in 3A was an eye opener, but he expects better things this year. Brock Orme is back for his third season as Juab’s starting quarterback, but he was shaky in the opening day of camp. The coaching staff isn’t concerned at all, and even joked with Orme about his rust. The biggest concern for Juab entering the 2010 season is the lack of experience on the lines.
DELTA — Coach Russ Henrie said he expects the same ol’, same ol’ from Delta this year, but that’s always a good thing. The Rabbits return a decent amount of starters on both sides of the ball, but they will feature a new quarterback in junior Colin Christensen. Henrie is extremely excited about his potential, even though he has no idea who the starting running backs are yet that he’ll hand the ball to in the wishbone. Regardless, Delta will be a quicker team on the line this year and that should enable it to be more productive offensively. Henrie said if his team can “out-hit them, out-hustle them and out-heart them,” Delta will be alright.
PAROWAN — After a quarterfinal appearance last year in 2A, the Rams are changing things up drastically this season. Coach Matt Labrum is switching to a spread offense and moving Zack Wood to quarterback. Ryan Robinson, who has played quarterback his whole life, is moving to receiver. Wes Marshall, who previously at Beaver, is the new offensive coordinator. Overall, Parowan has plenty of skill position players back but the kids on the lines will be very inexperienced. Just a few days into summer camp, Labrum believes the attitude of this year’s team is much better than last year.
MAPLE MOUNTAIN — The first year Golden Eagles didn’t win a game last year, but coach Brad Burtenshaw is hopeful that will change this year. His team will still be young though with only a handful of seniors. The biggest question right now is at quarterback. Junior Jace Edmunds is the returning starting QB after passing for 834 yards last season in the spread offense, but he’s in a quarterback battle with senior Tyson Jex and junior Skyler Porcaro.
