Morgan Invitational Highlights

Plenty of impressive individual performances came out of the Morgan Invitational this past weekend. It is one of the lower key track and field state qualifying meets during the spring. But there is no doubt that many athletes who competed at Morgan High School on Saturday will be in the state title mix based on the results they generated.

Here are some highlights from the Morgan Invitational:

~ Sky View ran away with both the boys and girls teams titles. The Bobcats scored 142 points to win the boys crown. Judge Memorial finished second with 63. On the girls side, Sky View tallied 139.5 points for the victory. North Summit was the runner-up with 66 points.

~ Tanner Hunt is going to be tough to beat at the 4A meet in May. The Sky View sprinter claimed victories in the 100, 200 and 400 meters. He finished the 100 in 11.05 seconds, the 200 in 22.32 and the 400 in 48.54. He also ran the anchor leg on the Bobcats 4×400 relay team — which finished first with a time of 3:27.51.

~ I don’t know of any meet I’ve seen this season that can rival the results in the girls 400 meters race at Morgan. The top seven finishers in the event all clocked in under the one minute mark. Sky View freshman Brenna Porter won the 400 with a time of 57.63 seconds — just 0.12 seconds ahead of Weber sophomore Mykah Heaton, who took second.

~ Ogden flexed its muscle in the distance races. In the boys events, Jacob Barton won the 1600 meters with a time of 4:35.29 and teammate Jordan Cross captured the 3200 after finishing in 10:27.04. In the girls events, Avery Calton took the 800 after crossing the line in 2:21.56. Jaime Stokes added a victory in the 1600 after finishing in 5:08.37. Both Calton and Cross are freshmen.

~ St. Joseph’s Alex Shaw and North Summit’s Erica Richins both posted fantastic times in picking up individual event victories. Shaw won the 3200 meters in 11:30.70 and Richins claimed first in the 300 hurdles after finishing in 47.73 seconds. To put it in perspective, Shaw beat the 5A qualifying time and Richins surpassed the 4A qualifying time for those events.

~ Logan and Morgan enjoyed strong showings in the throwing events. On the boys side, Logan senior Billy Phillips had a throw of 148 feet and 1 inch to win the discus and Morgan senior Jordan Wilde went a distance of 169-5 to win the javelin. The two teams flip-flopped in those same events on the girls side. Morgan’s Chelsea Stegelmeier won the discus with a throw of 126-05.50 and Logan junior Jordan Hartman won the javelin after going a distance of 110-03.

~ Finally, another North Summit athlete looked impressive in the field events. Braves sophomore Samantha Nicholes went 17 feet and 3 inches to win the long jump. Not only is that distance better than her 2A title winning jump of a year ago, but it would have won either the 4A or 5A title as well.
