Panguitch Invitational Highlights
Several southern and central Utah schools from the 1A and 2A ranks gathered to compete in the Panguitch Invitational last Friday. It offered a glimpse at who could emerge as state title contenders from 1A and 2A in several events.
Here are some highlights from the Panguitch Invitational:
~ South Sevier sprinter Michael Abbott could be a big state title favorite when the 2A meet rolls around. Abbott won the 100 and 200 meters on Friday. His 100 time of 11.22 seconds ranks among the ten best in the state in that event this spring. And his 200 time of 23.09 ranks in the top 20 for that event.
~ Panguitch’s Eric Frandsen enjoyed a solid outing, winning three individual events. Frandsen won the 300 hurdles with a time of 40.29 seconds. He earned a sweep in both jumping events. Frandsen claimed the high jump crown after clearing a height of 6 feet and 6 inches and took first in the long jump after going a distance of 20 feet and 2 inches.
~ Piute distance runner Benjamin Bagley earned a pair victories — winning the 800 in 2:15.64 and the 1600 in 5:30.70.
~ Distance running is in the Norris family blood. For evidence of that, you only need look at what Kalani Norris did in the 1600 meters race. The sister of former Panguitch star Trac Norris made her debut in the event memorable by winning it in 5:52.01. Norris also claimed victory in the discus with a winning throw of 109 feet and 1/2 inch and placed second in the shot put.
~ Kanab had an overall solid outing as a team in the girls events. Leading the way for the Cowboys was Kaytee Glover, who won the 100 hurdles after finishing in 17.14 seconds and claimed first in the high jump after clearing five feet. Asleigh Cserepes joined Glover as an individual winner after finishing in 13.38 seconds to win the 100 meters.
~ Piute sprinters Loni Allan and Amanda Bagley enjoyed a strong showing in a pair of short distance races. Allan won the 200 meters with a time of 27.49 seconds and Bagley finished third. Bagley claimed victory in the 400 meters after finishing in 1:03.86 and Allan took second in that event.
