Farm Bureau Invitational Highlights

A smaller invitational that piqued my interest from this past weekend was the Farm Bureau Invitational at Carbon High.

Other than Judge Memorial or Richfield, it did not contain a ton of traditional powers in track and field. Still, there were plenty of state title contenders in action in Price and some of the results could offer a glimpse at a few athletes to watch at BYU later this month and next month.

Here are highlights from the Farm Bureau Invitational on Saturday:

~ Judge and Juan Diego split the team titles between them. The Soaring Eagle tallied 95 points to win the girls title and the Bulldogs tallied 111 to claim the boys crown. Both races went down to the wire. Juan Diego scored just six more points than second place finisher Tooele. And Judge held off first year school Stansbury by a 10- point margin.

~ Tooele senior Lindsay Terry enjoyed a strong outing in the short-distance events. Terry swept the 100, 200 and 400 meters. She won the 100 with a time of 12.66 seconds, then claimed victory in the 400 with a time of 59.61 seconds and capped it off by prevailing in the 200 after finishing in 26.09.

~ Juan Diego earned the team crown with solid performances in the distance and throwing events. Sophomore runner Kiley Green finished first in the 3200 meters with a time of 12:43.36 and also claimed first in the 1600 with a time of 5:49.86. Lindsay John won the shot with a throw of 35 feet and 3 inches and finished second in the discus.

~ Judge junior Damara Walker claimed victories in the 100 hurdles and long jump. Walker won the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.95 seconds and jumped 16 feet and 10.5 inches for her other event win.

~ Stansbury came within a whisker of a team title largely because the Stallions did well in the mid-distance and distance races. Stansbury junior Tyson Lambert swept the 1600 and 3200 meters. Lambert claimed first the 1600 after finishing in 4:47.00 and won the 3200 in 10:20.56. Stallion teammates Greg Atkin and Luke Jones split the mid-distance races. Jones, a sophomore, finished in 53.44 seconds to win the 400 and Atkin, also a sophomore, won the 800 in 2:11.53.

~ Richfield junior Timmy Johnson looked impressive in picking up victories in both the high jump and long jump. Johnson cleared a height of 6 feet and 5 inches to win the high jump and propelled himself 21 feet and 4 inches to prevail in the long jump.
