Dixie Invitational Highlights

While I was at Davis High on Saturday covering the Davis Invitational, a half-dozen other invitational meets took place throughout the state. I’ll do my best to share some highlights from them once I get results.

First up are highlights from the 2010 Dixie Invitational that took place on Friday and Saturday at Dixie High:

~ Cedar claimed both the boys and girls team titles. On the girls side, they scored 128 points and finished 36.5 points ahead of second-place Dixie. On the boys side, Cedar tallied 161.5 points to outpace Hurricane for the top spot. The Tigers took second with 144 points.

~ For the second time this season, Enterprise standout Jodi Williams set a new 2A high jump record. Williams set the record previously when she cleared a height of 5 feet 8 inches at the Pine View Invitational in March. Williams went an inch higher on Saturday — going 5 feet 9 inches to win the high jump. Odds are looking good for her to do it a third time before the season is over.

~ Dixie stayed as close as it did to Cedar in the girls team competition because of big wins from thrower Jennika Wright and sprinter Maria Allen. Allen finished in 25.55 seconds to win the 200 meters and claimed victory in the 100 meters with a time of 12.53 seconds. Wright once again earned first-place finishes in the shot put and discus. Her winning shot throw went 38 feet and 8.75 inches. In the discus, Wright threw a top distance of 110 feet.

~ Aubrey Bryson was one of Cedar’s top individual performers in the girls events. Bryson earned second place finishes in the 100 and 200. She also claimed victory in the 400 meters after finishing in 58 seconds flat. Besides Bryson, Ashley Grey won the 800 meters and Kayla Shakespeare won in the long jump to pick up important points for Cedar.

~ For the Cedar boys, Teyson Fullmer shone brightest. Fullmer had a strong outing on the final day of the meet — picking up victories in the 100, 200 and long jump. He won the 100 after finishing in 11.30 seconds, claimed the 200 with a time of 22.82 seconds and went a distance of 20 feet and 7 inches to prevail in the long jump.

~ Several Hurricane athletes managed top eight finishes in a wide spectrum of events to keep the Tigers in contention for a team title down to the end. The top performer in individual events for Hurricane was Tim Long. In addition to second place finishes in the javelin and 300 hurdles, Long won the 110 hurdles by crossing the line in 15.70 seconds.
