Alta Invitational Highlights
This year’s installment of the Alta Invitational produced one of the bigger surprises of the 2010 track season.
Box Elder beat out defending 5A champion Riverton for the girls team title. It should be noted that a few of the Silverwolves’ top athletes were not at Alta High on Saturday because they were in California competing at the Arcadia Invitational. Still, beating a team as deep and talented as Riverton sends a message that the Bees will be tough to compete against when the state meet arrives next month.
Riverton won the boys competition handily, scoring 116.5 points and beating second-place Alta by a margin of 58.2 points. Box Elder edged the Silverwolves on the girls side, scoring 89 points compared to 82 for Riverton.
Here are some individual highlights from the invitational on Saturday:
~ Brighton teammates Aubrey Hale and Kylie Hirschi added more victories to their growing tallies. Hale won the 100 meters with a time of 12.32 seconds and claimed victory in the 200 with a time of 26.35. Hirschi dominated the hurdles. She finished the 100 hurdles in 15.35 seconds – a full second ahead of the next finisher – and took the 300 hurdles in 43.65. In that race, she crossed the line nearly three seconds ahead of the next finisher.
~ Viewmont junior Candace Moyes swept first-place finishes in the high jump and long jump. Moyes won the high jump after clearing a height of 5 feet and 2 inches. She took first in the long jump with a distance of 17 feet and 1 inch.
~ Fremont thrower Ben Johnson had a strong day in the throwing events. Johnson, a senior, claimed first in the discus with a throw of 155 feet flat and he also took first in the shot put with a top throw of 49 feet and 3 inches.
~ Pleasant Grove’s Evan Argyle continues to establish himself as a formidable distance runner after claiming victories in the 800 and 1600 meters. Argyle, a senior, won the 1600 after finishing in 4:23.22 – more than 14 seconds ahead of the rest of the field. He took the 800 after crossing the line in 1:58.60
~ Alta senior Skylar Burningham showed well on his home track. He edged out Cottonwood’s Spencer Larsen to win the 400 meters with a time of 48.75 seconds. Burningham also won the 200 after crossing the line in 22.99. Larsen won the 100 with a time of 11.27 seconds.
~ Jacob Peterson pulled off an impressive victory when he edged out Carbon senior Brock Morley to win the 110 hurdles. Peterson, a Riverton senior, finished in 15.51 seconds – just 0.09 seconds ahead of Morley. In the 300 hurdles, Morley bounced back to win with a time of 39.60.
