Davis District Championships Highlights

Last weekend was pretty quiet as far as high school track goes. But there were several mid-week invitationals that went on through the nasty weather that seems common around this time of year.

Here are some highlights from one mid-week invitational from last week – the 2010 Davis District Championships:

~ As expected, Davis dominated both team competitions. The Darts scored in every girls event and tallied 39 points in the 3200 meters race alone – placing first through seventh – to run away with a team title. As a team, Davis tallied 254.5 points. Viewmont finished second with 106 points and Syracuse placed third with 105. Davis also dominated in the boys events – totaling 244 points versus 109 for second-place Syracuse. Bountiful claimed third with 105 points.

~ Davis sprinter Dani Figgins turned in a fine individual performance. Figgins won the 100 meters with a time of 12.74 seconds and the 200 in 26.65 seconds. She also ran the second leg on the winning 4×400 relay team. Figgins shared co-MVP honors with Bountiful thrower Karen Wilkinson, who won the discus with a throw of 111 feet and 11 inches.

~ Viemont’s Candace Moyes produced the outstanding performance of the meet among the girls athletes when she won the long jump with a distance of 17 feet and five inches. Moyes set both a stadium record at Syracuse High and a meet record for that event. She added a win in the high jump – clearing 5 feet 4 inches to finish first.

~ Davis hurdler Kyler Sprague mirrored his teammate Figgins with his strong performance in the boys events. Sprague swept both hurdles events – winning the 110 with a time of 15.93 seconds and finishing in 40.77 seconds to claim victory in the 300 hurdles. He also ran a leg on the winning 4×400 relay team. Sprague earned co-MVP honors for his efforts.

~ Sharing MVP honors with Sprague was Bountiful sprinter Zach Andrews, who won both the 200 and 400 meters. Andrews won the 200 with a time of 23.42 seconds and took the 400 with a time of 50.05. Mario Harper helped the Braves complete the sprint sweep by finishing in 11.32 to win the 100.

~ Northridge thrower Skyller Whitney earned the outstanding performance of the meet among the boys athletes when he won the discus with a throw of 167 feet and four inches. That distance set a new stadium record.
