Friday night boys hoops observations
The biggest upset of the night had to be Delta’s 58-57 victory over Emery. The Spartans came into the region finale with a 9-0 region mark and the league title already sewed up. Now there’s definitely an element of doubt heading into the playoffs.
The victory was huge for the Rabbits who clinched a playoff spot in the process, and now won’t have to worry about playing a region play-in game.
Here are some other observations from Friday’s night’s slate of boys basketball games:
Brighton and Alta each won their games on Friday not to remain atop the Region 4 standings, and in the process set up a showdown next Friday at Alta.
Skyline beat Murray 49-39 and in the process realistically clinched the No. 2 seed from Region 2.
Mountain Crest needed overtime to knock off Sky View 56-51, but with the victory the Mustangs remain in first place in Region 5 and are on track for the region title.
Less than a month after beating Tooele by 22 points, Olympus needed overtime at home no less to beat Tooele 39-38. It’s looking like the Titans might’ve peaked when they beat Bingham in the preseason.
Stansbury picked up its first region victory of the season with a 65-49 victory over Woods Cross. The loss is likely devastating for the Wildcats in their hope for a quality seed at the state tournament.
Hurricane moved back into a first-place tie in Region 9 by avenging an earlier loss to Desert Hills with a 68-55 victory over the Thunder. Both teams are now 8-3 with one game remaining in league play.
What’s going on with Juan Diego? On Wednesday it lost to Morgan and on Friday it dropped its season opener against Ben Lomond 51-33. Having lost three of its four heading into the playoffs, the Soaring Eagle don’t seem like much of a threat at state anymore.
Last year West Ridge won two games. Now they’re two more victories away from a Region 17 title. West Ridge picked up a huge victory by beating Intermountain Christian 46-44 to improve to 7-1 in league play.
