Wednesday night boys hoops observations

Jordan’s 71-64 overtime victory over Lone Peak was a thrilling game, and an extremely impressive performance by the ‘Diggers. They trailed almost the entire game, but methodically hung tough and hit big shots when they needed them.

Lone Peak’s Nick Emery had a great game with 29 points, but it appeared he might’ve tried to do too much down the stretch. On two possessions in the fourth quarter he drove into the lane but had his shots block by Kevin Goldsmith.

Here are some other observations from Wednesday night’s slate of boys basketball games:

American Fork is breathing easier after a 71-53 victory over Hillcrest, its first Region 4 victory of the season. With six games remaining in the region the Cavemen trail Lone Peak by two games for the final playoff berth from Region 4.

It’s probably safe to hand Mountain Crest the Region 5 title after it beat Sky View 40-33. The Mustangs are now 7-0 in region play and they’ve won nine straight. Perhaps the only drama will be for third, fourth and fifth place as Box Elder (3-4), Ogden (3-4) and Logan (2-5) are bunched very tightly.

It seems that whenever Region 9 teams square off there’s excitement, and that appeared to be the case again on Wednesday as Cedar beat Canyon View 45-42 and Hurricane beat Dixie 64-57 in overtime.

Juab picked up an impressive 56-32 victory over Delta, and with a 4-1 record in Region 12 it only trails undefeated Emery (5-0) by one game.

Kanab had four players score in double figures as the Cowboys picked up a much-needed 75-55 victory over Millard in Region 13.

Kudos to Dugway, which outscored Wendover 17-12 in the fourth quarter to earn a 52-49 victory, its first of the season.
