Tuesday night boys hoops observations
Not much was expected of Uintah in its first season as a 4A school, but after Tuesday night’s 67-62 win over visiting Spanish Fork suddenly the Utes find themselves in a first-place tie with Springville with 3-1 records. Can the Utes keep it up?
Here are some other observations from Tuesday night’s slate of boys basketball games:
Viewmont is probably feeling good about itself after getting a bit of revenge against Syracuse. Back on Dec. 15 Syracuse edged Viewmont 59-53 in overtime, but in the second go around Eric North’s lay-up at the buzzer lifted Viewmont to the 52-51 overtime victory.
Cottonwood seems to have emerged as the second-best team in Region 2 following a 52-37 victory over Hunter. It trails region front-runner West by a game in the standings, and gets a crack at the Panthers this Friday.
There’s still a lot of basketball remaining in Region 3, but following a 67-63 overtime loss at West Jordan, Riverton suddenly finds itself in the midst of a three-game losing streak and in fifth place in the region. They need to climb back into fourth place otherwise the ‘Wolves won’t be in the playoff mix this year.
Bountiful and Olympus both won in Region 6, which sets up an intriguing showdown this Friday when Olympus visits Bountiful.
Most of us though Provo at Timpview was going to be an exciting game, but it sure turned into a dud as Provo outscored Timpview 13-2 in the first quarter. The T-Birds never recovered and it looks as if their hopes for a Region 7 title have been dashed.
