Wednesday night boys hoops observations

So many narrow losses might finally be catching up to American Fork. In the Cavemen’s first four Region 4 games it lost to Jordan 54-51, Brighton 62-60, Alta 57-53 and Pleasant Grove 64-61. On Wednesday night American Fork was hammered by rival Lone Peak 67-47 to drop its Region 4 record to 0-5.

American Fork still has seven region games remaining to try and work its way back into the Class 5A playoff picture, but it’s going to be a very tall order.

Other observations from Wednesday’s night’s slate:

I had the pleasure of covering Alta’s 53-49 overtime victory over Jordan, and the atmosphere definitely felt like a playoff game. Both teams played sloppy at times, but in the fourth quarter both hit some big shots when it mattered most. In overtime Alta was the more poised team and now there are no undefeated teams remaining in Region 4 just a few weeks into the season.

Mountain Crest remained perfect in Region 5 with a 55-46 victory over Logan as Matt Stewart led the way with 26 points. The Mustangs have won their five league games by an average of 13.4 points.

Desert Hills rode an eight-game winning streak into Wednesday’s showdown, but Hurricane reminded the Thunder who the king of Region 9 (3A) still is with a 45-42 victory.

Parowan has definitely had its struggles this year, which is why it wasn’t surprising that visiting Kanab raced to a 31-15 halftime lead. What was surprising though was that the Rams outscored the Cowboys 40-20 in the second half to pull away for the 57-51 victory.

Region 20 is a tough region to try and figure out. Last week Milford beat region front-runner Panguitch by 14, but on Wednesday the Tigers lost to Piute by 13. Every night there appears to be a surprising result, which should make for an exciting remainder of the season and the region tournament.
