Wednesday night boys hoops observations
The biggest lesson I learned in Wednesday night boys hoops was don’t judge Juan Diego by its overall record. The Soaring Eagle improved to 5-5 overall with an intense 40-36 win over Judge.
Juan Diego’s preseason losses were to teams such as Bingham, Lehi and Lone Peak, and the defeats seem to have made the team stronger. With a scorer like Ajay Pizza, a playmaking point guard in Morgan Hesleph and a gritty defense, the Soaring Eagle are a serious contender in 3A.
Other observations from Wednesday night’s games:
Here’s another team to watch: Grantsville. Never mind the Cowboys’ 4-9 overall record. They took Juan Diego to the limit in their Region 11 opener, and beat 11-2 Ben Lomond 45-36 on Wednesday night. Grantsville didn’t start the season strong, but seems to have worked things out in time for league play.
Pizza mentioned that Juan Diego got a monkey off its back when it ended a five-game losing streak against Judge. Pleasant Grove did the same thing. The Vikings defeated Lone Peak, 55-47, ending a six-game losing streak against the Knights.
It was blowout Wednesday. Of the 25 games played, 15 were decided by double digits. One team beat another by 56. I’ll make you look at our scoreboard to figure out which teams were involved.
Huge win for South Summit, which I know will make a couple of friends proud, over Waterford. The Wildcats were expected to be more consistent than they were during the preseason. Their 48-39 victory over the Ravens, with Robbie Rydalch and Trevor Rydalch combining for 25 points, could give the Wildcats the momentum shift they’ve been waiting for.
Mount Vernon’s David Black was the top scorer of the night, putting in 26 points against Meridian. The rest of the Patriots only scored 15 and Meridian won, 72-41.
Best game of the night? I’d have to say the one I went to: Judge-Juan Diego. But it was interesting that the best player in the gym was in street clothes though. West’s Tyrell Corbin watched the game in the bleachers on an off night for the Panthers.
Did you go to a game tonight? What did I miss?
