Tuesday night boys hoops observations
Here are some quick observations from Tuesday night’s slate of boys basketball games:
In a swing Region 1 game, Jaxon Reid drilled a shot from the top of the key with five seconds left to lift Syracuse to a big win over Weber, 41-39. Weber’s Jake Oberg hit a three-pointer with 32 seconds left to tie the game, but Reid’s clutch basket put the Titans over the top. With the win, Syracuse moved to 4-1 in Region 1, while Weber dropped to 2-3.
Murray’s 44-40 win over Cottonwood wasn’t pretty by any stretch of the imagination, but the Spartans held the Colts to just two points in the fourth quarter to pick up the win. David Collette led the way offensively for Murray with 12 points.
In a battle of southern Utah County rivals, Salem Hills made a number of clutch free throws late to beat Spanish Fork, 63-60. Spanish Fork fans will note the huge disparity in free-throw attempts between the two teams (Salem Hills shot 31 free throws to Spanish Fork’s 15), but the Skyhawks should get credit for making 25 of their 31 attempts to just eight makes out of the Dons’ 15 attempts.
In the league opener for both teams, Wasatch drilled Carbon 75-51 to improve its glossy record to 12-1. Trevor Bamgartner had 21 points and Mike Brown added 18 for the Wasps.
