Hellstrom named Gatorade athlete of the year

Bonneville graduate Tiffany Hellstrom received an exciting honor last week. Hellstrom, who recently wrapped up her senior season as a javelin thrower for the Lakers, was selected as the 2009 Gatorade Utah High School girls track and field athlete of the year.

The award recognizes athletic and academic excellence. Hellstrom is now be a finalist for Gatorade’s national award, which will be announced later this month.

Last month, Hellstrom threw the javelin 150 feet, 11 inches and tossed the discus 127 feet, 4 1/4 inches to be crowned a state champion in both events. She previously won 4A javelin titles in 2007 and 2008.

Hellstrom also recorded the no. 6 mark nationally when she threw her javelin 151-9 to win at the Davis Invitational in April. For that, she earned the Utah High School Track Coaches Association’s 4A female performance of the year award.

It is a well-deserved honor for Hellstrom, who will compete for Weber State starting in the 2009-10 season.
