HS track rewind: Davis District Championships
I meant to post this before the weekend, but got sidetracked with a couple of other assignments. Here are the highlights from this week’s Davis District Championships.
(I owe a big thank you to Syracuse coach Roger Buhrley for sending me the complete results of the two-day meet.)
Most Impressive Performers —
Tyrell Yardley, Syracuse: The junior’s winning 100 meter time was ultimately wind-aided. But he still posted victories in four events — winning the 100, 200 and serving as a leg on the first-place 4 x100 and 4 x 400 relay teams. Yardley also set a new meet record with a time of 21.93 seconds in the 200. He is looking more like the sprinter to beat at the 5A state meet this year.
Candace Eddy, Davis: Eddy swept first place finishes in the 1600 and 3200 meters and ran a leg on the winning girls 4 x 800 relay team. Her 1600 time, 5:10.44, broke a ten year old meet record. Eddy’s time in the 3200, 11:13.15, eclipsed a 27-year old meet record set in 1982 by Bountiful runner Carolyn Smith. The senior is rounding in top form after injuries slowed her during cross country season.
Brooke Jensen, Davis: Jensen joined her teammate in setting new records. Her winning time of 45.31 in the 300 hurdles bested a ten-year old meet record by five-hundreths of a second. Jensen also won in the 110 — although her time ended up being wind-aided in that event. It’s becoming obvious that Jensen will be a force to deal with when the state rolls around.
Bailee Whitworth, Viewmont: The Vikings senior won in the long jump and 100 meters and narrowly missed out on a first-place finish in the 200 as well. Whitworth won the 100 with a time of 12:58 and the long jump with a distance of 16 feet and 11 inches. Her 200 time, 25.65, eclipsed a four-year meet record set by Clearfield sprinter Chelsea Allen. Her time was barely short of a win with Davis sprinter Dani Figgins finishing first with a 200 time of 25.63.
Most Impressive Teams —
Davis: Can you say dominant? The Darts won team titles in both the girls events and boys events convincingly. Individually, Davis athletes finished first in 15 different races or field events. Multiple event winners included Jensen, Eddy, Seth Gutzwiller and Kyler Sprague. it will be a major challenge for the rest of the 5A field to compete with the depth the Darts sport this season.
Syracuse: Yardley was the most visible with his success. But several other athletes on the Titans’ boys team shined at the District Championships too. Aaron Hill beat the state qualifying mark by nearly 10 feet — throwing 152′ 09″ — to win in the discus. Tyler Siddoway also won in the javelin to help the boys finish second behind Davis.
