Highlights from the Pine View Invitational

If you were fortunate enough to catch the Pine View Invitational at Pine View High School this weekend, you were treated to a series of impressive performances.

For those who didn’t make it to St. George, (I’m included in that number), here is a rundown of highlights from the two-day invitational:

Most Impressive Performances:

Karl Wilcock, Hurricane — It is early, but Wilcock might be the one to inherit Luke Puskedra’s mantle as the state’s top distance runner. Wilcock made the Simplot Games his coming out party with a win up there earlier this year and he is continuing to dominate in the outdoor season. Wilcock edged out Snow Canyon’s Hayden Hawkes by two-hundreths of a second — finishing in 9:22.15 — to win the 3200. He also claimed victory in the 1600 with a time of 4:16.65.

Adam Hine, Snow Canyon — If Hine ends up being as good in football at BYU as he is in track for the Warriors, you will have a host of happy Cougar fans out there (and a host of angry Ute fans, perhaps). Hine picked up a trio of first-place finishes in the high jump, long jump and javelin. His best jump in the high jump went 6 feet 8 inches.

Shaye Maurer, Cedar — Maurer is one big reason the Redmen are state title favorites this spring. She is simply amazing in practically every event. She swept both hurdles events — winning the 100 hurdles in 15.19 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 45.11. She also claimed victory in the 200 meters with a time of 25.19.

Brooke Hodson, Timpanogos — Hodson is in good form already as a distance runner. She captured victories in the 1600 with a time of 5:14.69 and the 3200 with a time of 11:28.81. I’ll be interested to see how she fares against elite runners like Candance Eddy and Sarah Callister as the season progresses.

Trac Norris, Panquitch — Norris isn’t just one of the best 1A athletes. He might be one of the state’s best too. The senior claimed first place in the 300 hurdles with a time of 40.58 seconds. He also scored third place finishes in the 110 hurdles, 800 meters and the 1600.

Most Impressive Teams:

Cedar — You can pencil in the Redmen as the automatic favorite for a 3A girls team title after what they did at Pine View. Cedar won seven events and absolutely dominated the sprints and relays. In fact, the 3200 was the only running event period where the team did not win outright or score.

Timpanaogos — The T-Wolves looked solid in the distances with Hodson sweeping the 1600 and 3200 Becca Hutton also did well in the throwing events with a victory in the shot put and a second place finish in the discus. Most importantly, the T-Wolves demonstrated a nice range of depth. Timpanogos scored in every event except the high jump. In all the running events, the T-Wolves scored at least two or three runners.

Delta — The Rabbits flat out have some depth in the sprints this year and it is going to mean good things for them in 3A competition. Delta claimed victory in both the 4×100 and the 4×400 relays. Individually, Rabbit sprinter Brayden Brunson took home wins in the 100 and 200.

Snow Canyon — The presence of Adam Hine and Hayden Hawkes alone assures that the Warriors are going to score big points at state this year. The two combined for three first place finishes and two second place finishes in individual events. That’s 46 points for those of you keeping track at home.

I’m planning to highlight as many invitationals as possible each week for the high school sports blog readers here at the Deseret News. If you have results for invitationals during the season, feel free to send them my way at jcoon@desnews.com
