Hey MVP, they're calling you out

I swear I didn’t bait him to do this. I even have proof.
I interviewed Riverton centerfielder Tad Carter following the Silverwolves’ impressive 12-2 win over Taylorsville on what was a chilly Tuesday afternoon. I innocently asked him what was on tap for the rest of the week, and it led to him calling out the reigning 5A MVP.
Here’s the official transcript:
Me: Who do you guys got next?
Carter: We got Timpanogos on Friday. It will be a good game. Hopefully we see Rhett Nelson. That’s who we want to see.
Me: Calling him out huh?
Carter: Yeah (laughs).
So Riverton wants to face Timpanogos pitcher Rhett Nelson. That isn’t something most teams wish for.
But I promise you there was nothing mean-spirited or arrogant about what Carter said. it was all in good fun. The Silverwolves have simply blasted their first two opponents and want to see a challenge. There might not be a bigger challenge than facing Nelson.
By the time I interviewed Riverton coach Jay Applegate he had heard what Carter told me. He gave his centerfielder some grief, and Carter basically said what I just wrote. There was nothing mean-spirited about what he said.
We’ll see if Timpanogos grants Riverton its wish and throws Nelson on Friday.
That, of course, is assuming that fields will be playable on Friday due to this great March weather we’re experiencing.

It was an interesting day of baseball on Tuesday, so I thought I’d write a little recap here. If there was any question of whether American Fork was real, we now have the answer. The Cavemen routed 4A’s top-ranked Cottonwood 12-5. Hard-throwing Josh Mooney picked up the win for AF, which racked up 10 hits against the Colts’ deep pitching staff.
This result is proof that the Cavemen are the real deal, and also that Region 4 is getting robbed blind by having just three teams in the state tournament this year.

Big win for Northridge, which defeated Fremont 14-3 on Tuesday. The Knights are averaging 13.7 runs in region games. That’s crazy. I’ll see the Northridge-Fremont rematch if the weather permits on Thursday.

I debated which team to rank No. 1 in 2A out of Kanab and Parowan on Monday. Looks like I was wrong. The Rams picked up a key Region 13 road win by defeating the Cowboys on Tuesday. Parowan, to me, looks like the favorite to win the 2A championship this season. The Rams are fun to watch in any sport. They’re always scrappy and they love to compete. They’ll be tough to beat this season.

American Leadership broke Juab’s 30-game region winning streak on Tuesday. The Eagles forced the Wasps to strand eight runners in scoring position, and may have signaled a changing of the guard in Region 14, surprisingly before Juab moves up to 3A next season. Well, both schools will move up to 3A next year.
