First Round 4A/5A Atmosphere

With the drop in attendance at the playoffs for fall sports, I wondered if there would be fewer fans at the girls basketball tournaments. This year, instead of playing the first round of the 4A and 5A girls basketball tournaments at separate sites on the same day, the UHSAA played all of the 5A first-round on Monday, while Tuesday is eight games of 4A. All of the games are being played at SLCC’s Activity Center.
I think it was a great choice. The attendance has been awesome. Interestingly, Taylorsville, the closest high school to SLCC, had the worst fan support. Although, the Warriors played Lone Peak and they had very few students in the stands either.
Other than that, most schools packed the stands and several schools brought along the bands, cheerleaders and drill teams for half-time entertainment. It all made for a very energetic first day.
It didn’t hurt that all but two of the games were close. It was exciting basketball featuring some very talented and exciting players. The sportsmanship was pretty impressive and we had two upsets with Fremont losing to Kearns and Weber upsetting Region 2′s top seed, Brighton.
It was a long day, but very fun. In fact, it almost doest feel like work!
