Ty Detmer has no plans to follow Scott Mitchell's lead

For the past two weeks there have been rumors swirling around Utah County that former BYU quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer wanted to be, and was going to be, the new head football coach at Maple Mountain High when the new school opens next fall.
The thought of having Detmer coaching the neighboring and new rival school of Springville, where former Utah Ute great Scott Mitchell is now coaching, had folks in the Springville/Mapleton area buzzing with excitement. I was amazed at how many people approached me wanting to know if the rumor was true. It spread faster than a cold on a transcontinental air flight.
So I needed to know myself, once and for all. So I sent Detmer, now an executive for a financial firm in Austin, Texas, an e-mail on Tuesday afternoon. Within 15 minutes Detmer called me. He found the rumor a bit humorous, but just that, and confirmed it was a rumor and he had no idea where it began. He is very content living on his big ranch outside Austin and told me he has no interest in leaving his ranch or his job with Triton Financial.
Detmer is not, and said he won’t be, interested in Maple Mountain’s coaching job. Even new Maple Mountain principal John Penrod said he has not had any contact with Detmer, even though he admits that he was hoping he would once he started hearing the rumors himself.
So where did this rumor start? My guess is someone saw Detmer in Mapleton, where he visits a friend on occasion, and just jumped to an erroneous conclusion. Or, some zealous BYU fan was trying to take some attention away from Mitchell and one-up the Ute fans who are happy to see him back in town.
