Five on the rise
I mostly highlighted kids from small schools last week, so let’s go with some 4A and 5A players this week:
Parker Brown, Timpanogos: I swear I’m not posting his name just because someone was upset that I missed him last week. He deserved it for becoming just the second player in state history to kick two 50-plus yard field goals in the same game. He kicked two more field goals in a 42-24 win over Snow Canyon, although they were chip shots for him at 28 and 30 yards. He also threw for 303 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for 141 yards against the Warriors.
Chase Moore, Roy: I thought he was a player when I saw him shred Ogden as Ben Lomond’s quarterback in the Iron Horse last season. Now he’s at Roy, and coming on strong. He threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns in the Royals’ 48-34 loss to Morgan last week.
Tanner Hinds, Davis: I’m looking forward to seeing him run in the Davis-Layton showdown on Friday night. Last week, he recorded his third consecutive 100-plus yard rushing game, as he ran for 129 yards on 29 carries in a 21-6 win over Clearfield. For the season, he has rushed for 472 yards on 105 carries.
Karl ‘The Truth’ Williams, Layton: I am happy to report that is his real nickname, and not something I have just been calling him in the paper and on our Web site. ‘The Truth’ is also ‘The Real Deal’ (yes I’m mixing up nicknames from fighters in the 1990s). Williams has made sure Layton’s running game stayed at an elite level since tailback LaVaughn Jackson broke his foot in Week 1. Williams has rushed for 463 yards on 74 carries so far this season. He had 174 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries in a 38-13 win over Fremont last week.
Mike Fabrizio, Bountiful: He was huge in the Braves’ 17-0 win over Bonneville last week. On offense he rushed for 119 yards on 23 carries. On defense he was the team’s points leader with four unassisted tackles and two interceptions.
BONUS: I’ll come up with a bonus pick each week that doesn’t necessarily have to do with high school football, like my LaBeaus highlight last week.
Friday Night Rider: I’ve enjoyed the analysis and insight of the poster that goes by the name of Friday Night Rider the last few weeks. It’s good to see that people are not only passionate about high school football, but that they can also add to the discussions in a meaningful way. Thanks for reading Friday Night Rider and keep up the good work.
