Looking ahead to THE game

You’ve almost had to feel bad for the rest of the state when Alta and Bingham have played in football the last couple of years. It’s easy to get overshadowed when Utah’s two superpowers square off in football.

I’m wondering if this year’s matchup lost some luster when the Miners were stunned by Skyline. I doubt it, but I also wonder if this year’s crowd will measure up to last year’s. The crowd literally was standing-room only at Bingham last year. Fans were lined up deep outside of the barriers to get inside the Miners’ football field last year. Will as many show up at Alta on Friday night?

One of the reasons for last year’s attendance, I believe, is because there were so many well-known returning players on both teams. We’re still getting to know this year’s players, such as Alta’s Ammon Olsen and Parker Webster, and Bingham’s Jake Soffe. The players on Friday night have a lot to live up to in order to ensure this remains the top rivalry in the state.

I’ll be visiting both teams this week and filing reports. I’m planning on being at Bingham today and Alta on Wednesday.

Back to my wondering if this game has lost any luster. I just typed in the stats from the Bingham-Skyline game and I am stunned. Soffe was sacked seven times by Skyline. The Miners rushed for just 105 yards. I know the Miners didn’t have all of their players for that game, but those are disturbing statistics if you are a Bingham fan.
