Beware of Riverton's boys soccer team, Class 5A
The albatross collectively slung around the neck of Region 3 boys soccer teams is that they don’t win in the postseason.
Almost every week when I read through the plethora of comments that accompany each of my Top 20 rankings, I run across at least one comment ‘ sometimes followed by a couple others ‘ essentially saying that Region 3 has yet again been disrespected by the Deseret News and that Region 3 schools will just have to prove everybody wrong in the postseason.
There’s just one little problem with that perfect theory ‘ up until now, Region 3 teams have never won in the postseason after the first round.
However, the day when somebody from Region 3 breaks through in the postseason could be a lot closer than some think.
I watched Riverton rip rival Bingham apart in the first half before eventually winning 1-0 on Friday, and I left thinking, ‘You know, this Riverton team is not half-bad.’
With the win, Riverton moved to within three points of clinching the outright Region 3 championship with three games remaining. However, the much more impressive thing to me was the way the Silverwolves played against their rival.
With senior forward-turned-central midfielder Nate Swank orchestrating the attack, Riverton pinged the ball around extremely well, patiently found openings and created a number of great scoring chances. To be fair, the Silverwolves didn’t get any goals to show for their fantastic play, but I couldn’t but think, ‘If they play like this in the postseason, this could be a team be reckoned with.’
As Swank pointed out afterward, the Silverwolves had people flying all over the field.
‘Our team moves so good,’ he said. ‘Off the ball, when they know they have no play on the ball whatsoever, they can make a run across the field and drag the whole defense and leave just one guy open. We’re really unselfish like that, and it’s awesome.
‘That’s pretty much why we controlled the first half like that ‘ we had people moving off the ball like crazy.’
Goalkeeper Zach Dunn is outstanding, striker Ryan Smith is the real deal and Swank has been a star in the middle. Around those three guys on Friday was a terrific supporting cast, and if the Silverwolves continue to improve like coach Paul Moizer says they have all season, consider yourselves warned, Class 5A.
