Midseason Region 4 baseball report
By the end of this week there will only be four games remaining on the Region 4 baseball schedule. It’s a good time to look back at the past two weeks and look ahead at the next three.
By both going 0-4, I think Lehi and Pleasant Grove might already be out of the playoff picture. It’s probably going to take at least a 5-5 record to reach postseason, and I don’t think either team can go 5-1 from this point on. Their best hope is that somehow a 4-6 record is good enough.
If this pans out, that leaves Spanish Fork, Timpanogos, Lone Peak and American Fork battling it out for playoff position. If American Fork fails to sweep Lone Peak this week, the Cavemen give Lehi and P.Grove hope and I see them doing no better than fourth. If Lone Peak can get at least a split this week, the Knights are in good shape for at least a No. 3 seed. If the Knights can sweep the Cavemen, don’t count them out in the hunt for the title. Lone Peak is the league’s surprise team and is balanced in every category and playing with plenty of confidence. Their split with Timpanogos set the Knights up pretty good.
Still, I like what I’m seeing from Spanish Fork and Timpanogos and still think the region title will be decided when they meet up in the final week of the season. My preseason pick was Timpanogos. Now, it’s the Dons. For one, I didn’t think the T-Wolves would lose to Lone Peak. Two, Spanish Fork’s pitching is the deepest in the state and the Dons are finally finding their stroke at the plate.
Here’s my midseason prediction at how it all finishes.
1. Spanish Fork (9-1)
2. Timpanogos (8-2)
3. Lone Peak (6-4)
4. American Fork (5-5)
5. Pleasant Grove (1-9); Lehi (1-9)
For those who are wondering why I’m only focusing on Region 4 in this blog? My job as Utah County prep sports editor is mainly to cover the teams in Region 4 and Region 7 for our Utah County edition of the Deseret News. Last week I did a midseason report on Region 7 baseball.
