Baseball's biggest surprises and disappointments
I was looking at the baseball standings today, and was thinking about how most teams are playing right about where the coaches had them tagged in the preseason. Of course, there are a few surprise teams exceeding those expectations, and with them there are a few disappointing teams as well.
I think one of the biggest surprises has to be Northridge. The Knights are the second-highest scoring team in the 5A classification, are beating teams by an average of over five runs per-game, and tied atop the Region 1 standings with Viewmont. I would call Viewmont a surprise team, but they have won the last four Region 1 titles, so the Vikings being good again is more expected.
Alta wasn’t listed on a single ballot as a top-5 team when I got them back from the coaches before the season began, but they are at the top of Region 2 and are another of the surprise teams. A few others that jumped out at me as going above predictions so far are Box Elder, Mountain View and Parowan.
Along with some teams perhaps overachieving, there are some that have been disappointing. I am not a writer that likes to point out negatives, but a couple that jump out are Taylorsville, aren’t the Warriors always supposed to be top-5 team, Wasatch, the Wasps were on almost every ballot as being a top-5 3A team and are 3-9, and Mountain Crest, after the Mustangs postseason run to the title game last year, and with a ton of returning talent, their 5-6 record is not what was expected.
I am sure that there are plenty of fans and coaches that feel there are other teams deserving to be on the list one way or the other. Where do you feel teams need to be?
