Reg. 2 boys soccer: Get ready to rumble
I’ve been telling people since Day 1 that I thought Region 2 could be crazy fun to watch this season in boys soccer. It didn’t take a genius to figure that out when you realize the league features powerhouses Jordan, Alta and Brighton and would only be getting three playoff spots for its six teams.
With just four nonregion games remaining before teams get down to business, however, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Region 2 could even scarier than anyone previously imagined.
The statistics to date are staggering and tell the story: Region 2 teams currently have a 23-2-6 record and a +55 goal difference. I repeat: 23-2-6 and +55.
OK, some of those wins and some of those goals came against less than stellar competition — some did not — but the fact is five of the six Region 2 teams ‘ Jordan, Alta, Brighton, Taylorsville and Hillcrest ‘ are currently undefeated, and the league’s only two nonregion losses so far (both were suffered by Skyline) came against Davis and Bountiful.
All of which means that watching the Region 2 race unfold should make for insanely entertaining drama. The games between the Big 3 (Jordan, Alta and Brighton) could be off the hook, and those three schools will be faced with almost must-win games against the other three teams from the league ‘ Skyline, Taylorsville and Hillcrest.
Remember, Taylorsville advanced all the way to the semifinals a year ago, Skyline perennially has decent teams and Hillcrest secured wins over Brighton, Alta and Jordan a season ago. If any of the Big 3 slip up, there will be somebody waiting to keep them out of the postseason.
Coming from the guy that’s going to be paid to watch all of this unfold, I have but two words: Giddy up.
