Welcome girl golfers
With the weather warming up slightly, most golfers have dusted off the clubs and visited the local driving range at least once by now. And if they’ve been doing their practicing in the afternoon hours they’ve probably had the company of a dozen or so young ladies.
The first-ever season of girls high school golf in Utah is underway. But for most schools and coaches, the pickings of quality girl golfers are pretty slim right now. Some teams will have one or two outstanding players, but most will have one or two average players and many beginners. Some teams will have nothing but beginners.
But since this is the pioneer year for prep girls golf, things have to start somewhere. Coaches, for the most part, are spending most of their time actually coaching, giving instruction on the practice range and trying to develop future talent for this new opportunity for hundreds of young girls.
Thankfully, there’s plenty of fellow golfers willing to help. Most local PGA pros are volunteering lessons. Others from the UGA are donating time and advice to help get this new sport off the ground.
Not everything about this inaugural girls golf season will be easy or fair. The top players will likely find little quality competition. The actual matches will likely logjam courses. And scraping the bottom of the barrel for players can get frustrating. But everyone needs to show some patience. Years down the road, hundreds of girl golfers will be thankful for the ground being broken today.
Feel free to share your thoughts about the first season of prep girls golf in Utah.
