Another black eye and refreshing inspiration in prep sports
When can we stop the madness?
I was at the Cyprus at Layton baseball game Friday afternoon, and after a pretty good baseball game that Cyprus won 11-8 on a grand slam by Justin Eggers- more on him in a moment- as the teams were going through the customary line and congratulations, a full-on brawl broke out between the two teams. As if things weren’t bad enough, the parents for both sides became animated and began yelling obscenities through the fence only escalating the whole thing.
By the time both teams were separated, it was a couple of minutes later and there was a look of confusion on the coaches’ and Layton administrator’s faces. Now I am not going to place blame on either side because obviously both sides have their own version of what started it and I truly don’t know, but my question here is why are things like this becoming so common in high school sports? This season has seen more controversy over things such as this (such as the pheasant incident, the American Fork/Hunter brawl in football, hazing at East, players pushing an official after a basketball game etc.) than I can ever remember in my seven-plus years of covering prep sports. What can be done to remedy the situation? And what should be done to the players involved in Fridays ruckus?
It really was too bad because a game like Eggers had was overshadowed. Eggers hit a grand slam, and he also made a terrific over-the-shoulder catch running at a full sprint toward right field from his second base position to end the game. It should have been a celebration for a player that deserves some recognition. After talking with Cyprus coach Bob Fratto after the game about Eggers. He filled me in on what a great kid he is and how deserving it was to have him make plays like that.
Eggers appendix burst last year only three games into the season. He was out until just before the state tournament. When Fratto informed him that he would only be able to use him sparingly because the other players that had filled in for him all season had earned that right, the coach said Eggers simply put his arm around him and told him, ‘That’s all right coach. I just want what is best for the team.’
I have a feeling that if we had more players like Eggers in prep sports (he said he was at the back of the line and really didn’t even see what happened and was not involved) that incidents such as Friday’s fiasco wouldn’t be taking place.
