Upset alert

State tournaments always feature at least a couple of upsets. I have a strong hunch about one that’s going to take place tonight.

Ever since Clearfield has been locked into third place in Region 1, I’ve believed that the Falcons can pull off a first-round stunner. In fact, I think the Falcons are going to beat Pleasant Grove tonight.

It’s not that I don’t respect the Vikings. C.J. Wilcox is unbelievably talented. And LeSean Wilcox is simply one of the state’s best athletes.

The problem? Clearfield’s size.

The Falcons have two big and talented kids in 6-foot-9 Nick Thompson and 6-foot-6 Cam Evans. Thompson is athletic, and can score in bunches when he’s on. Evans is probably the strongest basketball player in the state, and he’s a solid finisher.

There’s no doubt that PG will have a big advantage in guard play. But I believe the Falcons will somewhat neutralize that by slowing the game down to a snail’s pace. Clearfield won’t let the game become a track meet.

Prep editor James Edward said I’m unintelligent for making this pick, and he might be right. I have no scientific evidence supporting my upset pick. Just a hunch. If PG wins by 20, let’s pretend I never wrote this.
