A no upset first round
I’m going to disagree with my colleague Andrew Aragon about the upcoming first-round upset that he’s predicting for later tonight.
I say it’s going to be a no-upset first round. Timpanogos played great basketball and almost pulled one off that would have been huge, but Davis had too many weapons down the stretch. Jackson Stevenett’s alley-oop dunk late was the best I’ve seen this year, because of how far from the basket he caught the ball and yet still dunked it over a defender.
My perspective about there not being an upset later when Pleasant Grove and Clearfield meet comes from having watched the Vikings play several times this year. I think Pleasant Grove has the best back court that I’ve seen, and I’m talking C. J. Wilcox, Craig Tucker, LeSean Wilcox and Brady Thurgood.
Yes, to me Pleasant Grove has a four-guard team. But these four are so good in the open court and each is very difficult to defend. And their athleticism seems to offset any deficiency the Vikings have in size.
It sounds like we’re going to have a battle of speed, quickness and athleticism versus size. With the exception of when they play Lone Peak, the Vikings have used those weapons to overcome size every time. I expect they’ll do it again tonight. Pleasant Grove is so much more hungry this year, and really wants a third shot at Lone Peak in Saturday’s final.
If PG wins by 20, let’s all remind Andrew of his gut feeling, and hope he’s just coming down with the flu. If PG loses, remember, I already have the flu.
