5A opening round underway

Two games are in the books here at the Dee Events Center, and it’s been a pretty entertaining 5A state tournament so far.

West Jordan’s overtime victory over Skyline was highly entertaining, and I’ve got to give Skyline props for keeping it close all game. I figured West Jordan would roll by about a dozen, but Skyline played great the entire game before coming up a little short in overtime. The Eagles only have two seniors on the team, so they should be even better next year and it might be fair to call them the Region 2 favorites right now.

West Jordan, meanwhile, appears to have shaken the rust off its three-game losing streak toward the end of the regular season. Junior point guard Mason Sawyer was the unsung hero of the Jaguars win. While Tyson Udy, Jordan Weirick and Tanner Connors scored the points, and Rayes Gallegos threw down the hammer dunk, Sawyer very quietly recorded nine assists with ZERO turnovers. They say you need good guard play at state, and Sawyer was fantastic today.

West Jordan’s quarterfinal opponent, Lone Peak, rolled as expected. The top-ranked Knights were simply too big and strong for underdog Fremont to keep up with. The Silver Wolves sure put up a good fight though by knocking down 11 of 24 3-pointers, compared to only 6-of-22 2-pointers.

Lone Peak outrebounded Fremont 33-20, and if the Knights play like they did today the rest of the tournament it’s hard to imagine them losing to anyone.

More 5A to come later …..
