Best Hoops Team Ever

As I was getting teased by the Davis coaching staff prior to Tuesday’s game for dropping the Darts from the top spot in the rankings, I had a quick and interesting chat with Jay Welk. In acknowledging there’s probably a method to my madness, Welk said he particularly liked my comment that Lone Peak might be one of the best teams in state history.
Meaning no disrespect to Lone Peak, he said there’s been a lot of very good teams throughout the history of the state.
He referenced some of the Bingham and Provo teams of the ’70s and ’80s as teams that stand out to him. I told him I can’t speak with much experience earlier than the ’90s, but I was a junior in high school during Viewmont’s dominant season in 1993.
The Vikings beat Timpview 73-55 in the 4A state championship ‘ the final year before the UHSAA added Class 5A ‘ and ended the year with a 24-0 record and a No. 23 national ranking in the USA Today.
I jumped on the Deseret News archives briefly to read about that title game win over a 21-2 Timpview team, and found this line: ‘All five starters scored in double figures as Jeramie Martin led the way with 17, followed by Alex Jensen with 14, Jared Peterson with 13, Don Faux with 12 and Jeff Robison with 11.’
That’s the type of scoring balance coaches dream about. Davis and Lone Peak both have it, but what makes the Knights so scary is that balance comes from five players who will end up playing college basketball.

It’s impossible to say definitively what the greatest team in state history is, but what teams stand out to our readers through the years.
