Is there a good loss?
With just three undefeated teams in the state at a little more than halfway through the season, I wondered if that’s a good thing for these players?
Wasatch (12-0)
Grantsville (14-0)
American Fork (12-0)
They’ve all played some tough games, although I think the Cowboys had the toughest pre-season schedule, and they’ve managed to win them all.
So does the pressure to stay unbeaten build with each win? Or can teenage athletes really focus on just one game?
Or is it, as some coaches have said, that a tough loss can be a character builder, a way to refocus and a reality check?
I have heard other coaches say there is nothing good about losing, although I suspect the key to good coaching is finding something positive in what seems like the worst moments of a season.
I talked to two formerly undefeated coaches this week and both said they felt the loss would ultimately benefit their players – but some of that benefit comes from the type of players you have.
Undefeated seasons are exciting, especially for fans and players. But for the development of a young team hoping to make a title run, is it better to feel the sting of losing somewhere before the playoffs?
